Sun Valley Fishing Report

Hot Update for January 9, 2008

see archive for other reports

We have experienced some cold, snowy conditions for the past couple of weeks, leaving us with an above average snowpack at this time. The Big Wood, Little Wood and Big Lost are all hovering around 130% of average. Hopefully it will keep coming. Access to the river will become more challenging now. Snowshoes or cc skis will help, unless your favorite access has been used some or is a game trail.

Big Wood River

The Big Wood has been very good if you can brave the cold. Most catching can be had by nymphing. There has been enough midge activity to get a few fish up, but they have not been selective and are sporatic. The few rises are good locator fish as to where to target your nymphs.
Large size 8 and 10 stonefly, bitch creeks, and rubber legs nymphs have been productive in the slow bellies of the pools. A size 16 or 18 zebra midge in black or green fished below a size 12 or 14 hare’s ear, copper john, weighted pheasant tail, or the like, fished in the shallower or slower waters of the pools have been my best producers. On the sunny days, which have been few, the heads of the pools have been fishing well right at the drop off where the riffles meet the bellies of the runs. Best fishing from noon until 4:30. We had 50 to 60 fish guide trips over the holidays. One client called it “stupid good”.
Dress for the weather and enjoy the solitude.
